Resource Governance

  • Description :
    Urls

There is only one Earth, we have no alternate earth, although people visit other planets, earth is the only habitable planet yet. When resources are stretched, there would be scarcity which leads to competition of various forms in diverse areas. By nature, natural resources are exhaustible meaning there will finish one day. As such it is good for us to make use of it. The important question really is, where would we be when these resources get exhausted? There is an absence of a diligent natural resource governance framework and structure. Resource governance brings everybody around the table who are considered important players when such resources are concerned. Any structure on ground is obviously not working. A working system should be people inclusive that is, it should involve the host communities, the government, the company or businesses trading in these resources. At the community level, the opinion leaders, youths and traditional rulers should be involved. No one who is part of a business would want to destroy it. In the case of the Niger Delta, though the people have the natural rights, they do not have the right in persona (person) as found in common law. It remains an important missing link. The people and society would always precede the government. The government exist only because the people wanted it to be a machinery through which their wills are expressed. The foreign entities should treat the land as theirs, be good neighbors as well. We can’t create an atmosphere that poisons people around us. We should care and manage the resources with sustainability in mind.
