WHY SHOULD ANYONE BE HONEST?

    Articles

At Lux Terra Leadership Foundation, we do a lot of advocacy on honest living. We believe that a lack of honesty is the single most important factor that has brought Nigeria down to its knees. The lack of honesty can be seen in the decisions ordinary Nigerians make on a daily basis in their respective dealings. Honesty is a core value which everyone should live by. But why? For what reason? What is the need for honesty? Is it to avoid punishment? You know, if someone is caught in a dishonest act, there are punishments which the person should have to bear. A person who lies should face punishment. A person who steals should face some punishment. A person who diverts funds should face punishment. A person who cheats other people or disobeys traffic laws or steals public utility or abuses his/her office or forges documents or does any other dishonest act should face commensurate punishment. However, avoiding punishment is NOT the reason for living honestly. Living honestly is all about who you are. It is about your personal values. It is about your beliefs and perceptions about yourself and life in general. A person who does the right thing just so as not to get into trouble is not necessarily a good person. It is the person who does the right thing just because it is the right thing to do that is the good person. In the same way, an honest person is the one who lives honestly, not to avoid trouble, but just because he/she believes it is the best way to live. Again, honest living is not about avoiding any form of punishment. It is simply about who you are. Now, you can ask yourself why you are being honest, or why you want to become honest. If it is simply to avoid punishment, then you need to go a notch higher. Honesty, like good behaviour, is its own reward. Live Honestly! Choose Integrity! Live right! Light up the world! #LuxTerraIntegrity #LightUpTheWorld #Honesty #Integrity #Accountability #BeDifferent #LiveRight #StopEvil #StopCorruption #BeTheChange #MakeADifference
