Following the recent #AnambraElection, our #AdvocacyThursday post serves as a gentle reminder for you, as we look forward to the 2023 elections! “AWAY WITH THE CYNICISM: OUR VOTES REALLY COUNT!” Very often, Nigerians shy away from actively participating in the electoral process. The usual excuse is that our votes don't count. This cynicism is robbing us of the opportunity to make our elections a vehicle for the transformation of our country Nigeria. If our votes don’t count, why do politicians campaign so vigorously before elections and try to buy votes on election day? Away with the cynicism... OUR VOTES DO COUNT! In the just concluded Gubernatorial elections in Anambra state, a careful comparison of the number of registered voters in the state against the number of persons who actually turned out and voted shows that voter apathy is still a challenge in Nigerians. Today on #AdvocacyThursday, we call on all Nigerians to take seriously their civic duty by participating actively in the political process and in elections. This process begins with registering for and picking up your PVC. We must commend the exemplary conduct of the people of Anambra state who displayed maturity and decorum while participating in the elections, especially the Women of Ebenebe and many others like them who refused to be compromised by turning down financial inducement and insisted on voting the candidates of their choice. The effectiveness of the INEC and the improvements in the election process that was witnessed in the Anambra elections is equally commendable. We also commend the gesture of sportsmanship by some of the governorship aspirants who wholeheartedly conceded defeat and congratulated the winner. These examples give us hope that our political process can get better. Come on people, away with the cynicism! Together we can make our elections better.
