This week on #AdvocacyThursday, we turn our hearts and minds to something of great importance to us as a people. THE RESTRUCTURING NIGERIA NEEDS As the electioneering season gets into full swing, and the usual trade-offs are being discussed, it is very easy for Nigerians at all levels to fall into the divisive trap of pitching one ethnic or religious group against another The problems with Nigeria are not so much about the balance of political power, but more about the quality of political leaders and the quality of electoral decisions that the voters make. Therefore we should continue to make the investment in challenging Nigerians to restructure their hearts and minds - to change the way we think about politics, elections and our participation in the process. We need to challenge people to get involved in political process and the internal workings of the political parties; encourage better and more competent people to become candidates; increase the turnout of voters at elections especially among the educated elite and youth, and change the narrative of voting away from godfatherism, monetary inducements and petty ethnic and religious sentiments. This is the restructuring we need the most - transforming the hearts and minds of Nigerians towards better actions in our political and democratic process This is the road less travelled, but the one more likely to deliver the dividends of democracy that we all yearn for.
